Are you searching for “types of pallets near me”? This post explains the various types of pallets, and the advantages and disadvantages of them.
Different Types of Pallets
Lightweight Plywood Pallets
A plywood pallet is excellent for holding light to medium weight items that need a reliable and dependable packing option.
Advantages
- Considerably tough even though they don’t weigh that much
- Lighter in weight, makes them optimum for shipping and transporting
- The plywood has a smooth, spotless surface
- Acceptable for layer stacking and/or rack stocking
Disadvantages
- If left outside, can suffer from water damage
- Can be challenging to store in racking
- Some warehouses are not set up to take on these types of pallets, so transfer between warehouses can be controlled
Wooden Pallets
Wooden pallets can be found in a number of designs. Usually, wooden pallets are used for more heavy products in a direct flow.
Advantages
- Beefy and long-lasting
- Acceptable for storing in racks
- Recognized to be a dependable load carrier
- Costs less than other pallet materials
- Easy to repair, as they are made with numerous boards which can be dismantled and replaced
- Can always be resold and reused
- Can be recycled
- Quick and easy to build
- Higher resistance in comparison to metal and plastic pallets
Disadvantages
- Can be a little heavier, so they can be more costly for air shipping
- Considerably hard to clean and if they become wet can lead to fungal and bacterial growth
- Wood slivers, extruding nails, warping, or shrinkage are frequent issues that lead to continuous reordering expenses
Presswood Pallets
Presswood pallets are molded from dried wood fibers into one solid piece through high temperature and pressure.
Advantages
- Very light weight
- Good strength for how light they are
- Can be recycled
- Can be stacked one on top of the other, so they are more efficient
- Some moisture resistance
- Easy to handle because of their weight
Disadvantages
- Can suffer from water damage if left outside for long periods of time
- Challenging to store in racking
- Some warehouses are not set up to take on these types of pallets, so transfer between warehouses can be controlled
Plastic Pallets
Plastic pallets are a durable and safe packing solution for all shipping applications and can be reused a number of times without special care.
Advantages
- Higher load capacity and non-slip surface
- Lower weight – from 12 lbs. (1200 x 800 mm)
- Humidity and corrosion resistant
- No disruption in delivery due to regulations
- 100% recyclable
- Long life span
- Resistant to chemicals
- Safe to handle
- Can be used in all climate surroundings
- Can be easily cleaned to clear away any bacteria
Disadvantages
- If cracking or breaking occurs, the pallet has to be melted down and remolded
- Increased cost as opposed to wooden pallets
- Commonly not suited for storage on shelving
Corrugated Cardboard Pallets
Cardboard pallets are formed from a framework of corrugated cardboard sheets which are designed to carry loads of up to 1,650 lbs.
Advantages
- Light weight but exceptionally strong
- More easy to handle
- 100% recyclable
- Customizable
- Less costly to transport due to their weight
